How to Tie a Scarf for a Fifties Costume
The 1950s were a decade of accessories and fashion rules for women, with hats and scarves being two must-haves before a lady stepped out. Adding a pretty flash of color to an outfit, a chiffon or silk scarf tied carefully around the neck could pull an outfit together neatly. With a nod to yesteryear, tie a scarf for a fifties costume and have fun jitterbugging the night away.

1
Choose a chiffon or silk scarf that coordinates with your outfit. Whether you are wearing a poodle skirt and a cardigan sweater or a tailored suit, pull a color out of your blouse or skirt and use a scarf in this color.
-
2
Fold a square silk scarf into a triangle and then fold it again several times until it becomes a long, thin piece. Gather a rectangular chiffon scarf together into a long and narrow scarf.

3
Place the scarf around your neck from behind and pull the ends around to the front.
-
4
Tie the ends together tightly around your neck in a double knot.
-
5
Slide the scarf knot so it rests on either shoulder.
-
6
Pull one scarf tail forward to rest on your collarbone and push the other scarf tail back to sit on your shoulder or slightly behind your shoulder.
-
7
Put your hair up in a high ponytail and tie another matching scarf around the ponytail.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a blouse or sweater with a V-neckline, tie a small silk scarf around your neck in a double knot. Rotate the knot slightly off-center and tuck the ends of the scarf under the neckline of the blouse or sweater.
