How Do You Shape Plexiglas?

Plexiglas is a type of acrylic sheet that is used in place of glass for many different applications. It comes in various sizes and thicknesses. Plexiglas can easily be cut to size, and while it is much more flexible than glass, it is also much stronger. Plexiglas has the ability to be bent to size to make certain shapes. While it is sometimes difficult to judge the bend properly, shaping Plexiglas is a job you can complete by following some basic instructions and having a partner to help with the process. Instructions

    • 1

Remove the plastic covering from both sides of the Plexiglas. Measure and mark the piece of Plexiglas at the bend location. Draw a line on the Plexiglas with a pencil. Line up a T-square along the mark and draw a straight line along the T-square across the entire piece.

    • 2

Set the Plexiglas on a flat table and place the mark along the edge of the table so it can be bent and shaped. Tighten it down to the table with a clamp. Turn on a heat gun and have a partner hold the Plexiglas in place on the table.

    • 3

Hold the heat gun 4 inches away from the Plexiglas and move slowly back and forth above it to begin heating it up. Inch closer to the Plexiglas and continue moving back and forth until it begins to sag. Keep heating the Plexiglas and gently begin bending it downward by hand.

    • 4

Push down carefully until you have the desired shape and turn off the heat gun once it has reached that shape. Hold the Plexiglas in place with one hand on each side until it cools down.

    • 5

Drip water over the bent edge to help speed up the cooling process. Repeat the process for any other shapes you need to make. Measure and mark the same sheet of Plexiglas at a different location and bend it to the desired shape.
