How to Create a Grid on GIMP thumbnail
GIMP allows you to customize a grid's color and other parameters.

Adding a grid overlay to a photograph can help you figure out the image's proportions, and can help you study the best ways to frame photographs in the viewfinder. The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, contains a built-in feature that can add a grid to any image. The GIMP software is open-source and is freely available; the program is designed for Linux, but Windows and Mac OS X installers are also available from the GIMP website.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP. Click "File," then "Open." Double-click the image file in which you want to create a grid.

    • 2

Click "Filters" in the top menu bar. Hover the mouse over "Render," then hover it over "Pattern" in the menu that opens. Click "Grid."

    • 3

Click the "Width" box under "Horizontal." Type in the desired width, in pixels, of the lines in the grid. To change the unit of measurement, click the drop-down menu at the end of the line of text boxes and select a new unit. GIMP automatically changes the "Vertical" and "Intersection" values to match the "Horizontal" setting.

    • 4

Click the first "Spacing" box. Type in the amount of space that you want to appear between each line in the grid.

    • 5

Click one of the color boxes at the bottom of the window. Click on the color that you want to use for the grid in the window that pops up.

    • 6

Click "OK" to create the grid and insert it into the image.
