Instructions

    • 1

Set up a ladder that allows you to reach the area of the tree that you want to prune. This might require an extension ladder. Ask a friend to steady the ladder to prevent an accident.

    • 2

Use a pole pruner to effectively reach the tall branches you want to prune. This can possibly allow you to stand on a shorter ladder or even on the ground.

    • 3

Cut underneath the branch first. Take a chunk out of the branch's underside in the shape of a wedge. This breaks away the bark.

    • 4

Saw off the majority of the branch from a spot that is further away from the base of the tree than the initial cut. This area will likely be thinner and easier to cut. You will now be left with only a stump to prune.

    • 5

Remove the rest of the stub from the opposite side of the initial wedge-shaped cut.
