How to Remove Stray Dots in GIMP
The older a photo is, the more likely it is to get damaged. One type of damage you may have to contend with in your photos is the accumulation of dots and spots from dirt or stains. You could take these photos to a professional restorer, but you can also repair them yourself using the freeware graphics program GIMP.

Load the photo with the problems you want to fix onto your computer.

Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate the photo you loaded and open it.

Go to the toolbar and click on the "Clone" tool. Go to the tool options and select a brush with a faded edge.

Hold down the "CTRL" key on the keyboard and click on a spot near the dot you want to remove on the image. Then paint over the dot and GIMP will use the spot you selected to paint over the dot. Save your work.
