How to Create Attack Macros in "World of Warcraft"

Macros can be programmed in "World of Warcraft" to enhance your gameplay and improve efficiency. If you are grinding, an attack macro can be programmed to automatically select the nearest enemy target and use your auto-attack ability. This is faster than pressing a series of buttons on the mouse or keyboard and can considerably lower your downtime. You can further enhance these attack macros depending on your character class. For example, a hunter can write a macro that casts Hunter's Mark on the nearest enemy target and sends his pet into attack at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Start "World of Warcraft" and log into your account. Load the character you want to create the macro for.

    • 2

Type "/macro". Typing "/" will automatically start writing in the chat box. The macro interface will appear. If you want to create a macro which can be used by any character, select "General Macros." If you want to create one for use only with your current character, select "(Yourname) Specific Macros." The latter should be used if you are creating a macro which uses spells or abilities native only to your class.

    • 3

Click the "New" button at the bottom of the window. Choose an icon for your new macro. If you choose the default red question mark icon, the icon will automatically change according to which spell or ability is being used.

    • 4

Enter your new attack macro into the box provided. To create a basic target and attack menu, type the following:

      /targetenemy

      /startattack

This will select the nearest enemy target and start your auto-attack. You should ideally replace the "/startattack" command with an opening ability or spell specific to your class. For example, adding "/cast Faerie Fire" as a druid in bear or cat form will use the Faerie Fire spell instead of your auto-attack, also pulling the enemy toward you in melee range.

Drag the icon from your macro onto one of the action bars. If you wish to associate it with a hotkey, drag it onto an action bar button with the hotkey inscribed on it.
