Instructions

    • 1

Ask the parents what type of activities the boys enjoy when you accept the babysitting job, particularly if you've never watched the kids before. Ask about any activity restrictions. Determine if you are able to take the boys for walks or to areas nearby, such as parks.

    • 2

Write a list of potential activities that match the boys' interests. Choose five to 10 of the activities, depending on how long you will babysit the kids. Keep in mind the boys' age and their attention span.

    • 3

Bring along your own board games or toys that match the boys' interests. Playing with new items often keeps the kids better entertained.

    • 4

Make up a list of items to find for a simple scavenger hunt. Think of items that will be available at the location where you will babysit. For example, if you will take the boys to a park with a pond, the list might include a duck, slide, sand, pine cone and feather.

    • 5

Take the boys outdoors if the weather allows. Play active games outdoors, such as tag, Simon Says or hide-and-seek. Walk or bike around the block with the boys if their parents allow it. Get a bucket of soapy water and let the boys wash their bikes or toy cars.

    • 6

Invite the boys into the kitchen to help prepare their dinner or snack. Cooking is often thought of as a girls' activity, but many boys also enjoy cooking. You get help with the kitchen duties, the boys stay entertained and they learn about measuring and mixing ingredients.

    • 7

Turn chores into games so the boys willingly participate in activities such as cleaning up and getting ready for bed. Challenge them to see who can finish first, or set a timer to see if they can beat it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play with the boys rather than giving them a game and walking away. They are more likely to stay engaged if you are playing too.
