How to Minimize Pidgin to the Tray

Pidgin, a free instant-messaging client, has a built-in feature that lets you minimize the program to the system tray. This is useful when you want the program cleared from your desktop space and taskbar but still want it to run in the background so you can receive messages.

  • Open Pidgin, and make sure the buddy list is visible on your desktop.

  • Click "Tools," and then click "Preferences" on the buddy list window. Set the "System Tray Icon" setting to "Always." This setting controls how Pidgin minimizes and closes. Alternatively, you can select "On unread messages" instead of "Always", if you want the Pidgin icon only to appear in the system tray when you receive an unread message. Close the "Preferences" window.

  • Click the "X" button in the top right corner of you buddy list. Pidgin should now minimize to the system tray. Using the traditional "_" button minimizes Pidgin to the taskbar, instead of to the system tray. If you want to completely close Pidgin, right-click the system tray icon and click "Exit".
