How to Become a State Lobbyist

Lobbyists give specific constituencies a voice in politics.

Passion for a subject inspires you to want change for the better. Change requires action. If you are passionate about larger social issues, then change requires the action of the legislature. Politicians can be greatly influenced by their constituencies, especially organized ones. As a lobbyist you can assemble interested constituents and sway a politician's vote. Your work as a lobbyist at your state legislature can change your neighborhood, your state or even the nation. Becoming a state lobbyist requires schooling, knowledge of the system and contacts.

Instructions

1. Go to college to get a degree in political science. Focus your studies on politics with a strong emphasis on business, public speaking and communications.

2. Choose a cause you are motivated to promote. Learn everything you can about the topic from online sources and groups dedicated to promoting your chosen cause.

3. Look online to find the laws in your state that regulate lobbying. Speak with your state attorney general's office to learn how and where to register as a lobbyist.

4. Make calls and write letters or emails to groups and individuals who may be interested in your chosen cause. Set up a website and start a blog where your group can congregate online so you can build your support base and become a more powerful and effective lobbyist.

5. Make appointments and meet with state legislators. Discuss your side of the topic with them, being sure to point out the benefits to the state your point of view promotes. Let each legislator know you have a strong support base that can help them with votes and financial support if they back your cause.
