How to Dissolve the Edges on a Picture in Photoshop

Use the feather tool to create a gradient that will create a dissolved border effect around your image.

Many professional photographers and image editors use Photoshop to add special lighting and bordering effects to their images. Photoshop contains many tools for adding a creative frame around your photo, but the program does not present you with an automatic effect for softening the edges of your picture. However, if you use the "select" and "feather" tools in Photoshop, you can create an effect that will dissolve the borders and soften the edges of your image.

Instructions

1. Click the "Select" button from the "Tools" toolbar on the left side of your screen.

2. Click "Window" at the menu at the top of your screen and check to see if the "Options" option has a check mark next to it. If not, click "Options." This will display the "Options" toolbar at the top of your screen.

3. Click on the text box next to "Feather" in the "Options" toolbar. Change the number to 150, and press "enter."

4. Select an area of your picture using the "Select" tool. Make sure your selection is close to the borders of your image, but also make sure your selection is not touching the image's borders.

5. Press "Control," "Shift" and "I" at the same time on your keyboard. This will invert your selection.

6. Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard.
