How to Give a Shape-Up With Clippers

Save

Shaping up your haircut in between salon visits is a great way to get more out of your haircut, while keeping more money in your wallet. Clippers allow even the most inexperienced person to trim off the edges and clean up their cut. Take off about 1/4 inch every few weeks, to maintain your cut -- or just take off the edges to get you through that important dinner or job interview.

Things You'll Need

  • Comb
  • Water bottle
  • Scissors
  • Choose a clipper guard that will only take off the ends of the hair on the sides and back. Test the different sizes by placing them against the scalp without the clippers. The hair that extends beyond the dip on the back of the guard will be removed. Keep it to 1/4-inch or less, for a shape up.

  • Attach the guard to the clippers and run the clippers, guard down, through the hair from the bottom of your hairline to the curve at the top of your head.

  • Wet down the hair on top of your head. Comb the hair straight out from the head and remove about 1/4 inch with the scissors. Follow the lines that are already there from the last haircut. Take off the same amount all over.

  • Trim around the ears and edge up the bottom at the nape with the trimmers. Remove all the hair that extends below the natural hairline.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you clean up around the edges with the trimmers, follow the natural hairline, as much as possible. Do not cut into the hairline. Only remove the hair that grows outside of the natural hairline to prevent stubbly regrowth and to keep your cut looking clean longer.
