DIY Cameo Jewelry
Cameo jewelry is often made from shell, glass or agate. The jewelry has a 3-D quality and is often formed into the shape of a woman's face shown in profile, but other images can also be used. The easiest way to make a cameo design is to use a mold, since performing a 3-D sculpture can be difficult. Using a mold takes much less time and usually produces better results for nonprofessionals. Polymer clay is a medium that can produce a similar effect to shell or glass for much less money.
Things You'll Need
- Cameo mold
- Polymer clay in two colors
- Frame for cameo, pendant or brooch
- Cornstarch
- Clay shaper (optional)
- Two-part epoxy glue

1
Dust the mold with corn starch to make the clay easier to remove later. Knead the color of clay you want for the 3-D part of the cameo between your hands until soft.
-
2
Press the clay into the mold. Make sure the clay is pressed into all grooves and holes, especially if the mold is detailed. Try to make the clay even at the top of the mold. Only fill the 3-D areas of the mold. The rest of the mold is filled with the background color.

Work the background color into your hands until soft. Press the background color into the mold. Carefully press the clay into the mold. You don't want to press too hard or the first clay color may squeeze out of the mold. If desired, you can use a clay shaper to press the clay in place.

Heat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the clay from the mold. Place the clay on a cookie sheet, flat side down. Cook in the oven for about 20 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness. Check the clay every 20 minutes to ensure the edges do not start to burn.

5
Allow the cameo to cool. Glue it to the frame with two-part epoxy glue. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours before using your DIY cameo brooch or necklace.
