How to Connect an RV Generator to an Outlet in my House

An RV generator provides a backup source of power in your home. You might connect your trailer's generator to your house in case of a power outage. RVs usually come equipped with a generator; the devices are also available individually from an RV store. RV generators typically range from 2,500 to 15,000 watts.

Things You'll Need

• RV in-trailer generator
• RV adapter cord

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker boxes in your trailer and house.

2. Check your RV generator for amp capacity and wattage; the amperage must match the items you are powering. Home and RV generators include 30 amp -- or 110-volt power -- settings.

3. Extend the RV plug at the end of your RV generator's cable.

4. Plug in an adapter to your RV generator cable; an RV plug is different from outlets found in the typical home. The most common adapters are the "dogbone" and "hockey puck" adapters. Both are available at RV stores.

5. Plug the generator into an outlet on the exterior of your home. Use a heavy-duty extension cord if plugging the generator into an interior outlet.
