How to Remove Condensation in Camera Phone Lenses

How to Remove Condensation in Camera Phone Lenses thumbnail
It's easier than you'd think to accidentally expose your phone to water.

Whether your phone took a tumble into the toilet or was lying on the countertop while you were washing dishes, the end result is a waterlogged electronic device. Some of this moisture can find its way into the lens housing of your phone's built-in camera. This can cause foggy pictures or, in a worst-case scenario, a completely inoperable camera. Removing this condensation is simpler than you might think, and no complex disassembly of your phone is needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic sandwich bag
  • Dry white rice

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your phone's battery and set it aside. Also lift out your SIM card, usually located just beneath the battery.

    • 2

Pour dry white rice into a plastic sandwich bag until half full. The rice will quickly absorb any moisture lingering in your phone, including the small amount of condensation on the camera lens.

    • 3

Place your phone into the bag of rice. Seal the bag and allow it to sit undisturbed overnight.

    • 4

Remove your phone from the bag of rice.

    • 5

Replace your SIM card and battery. Test your phone's camera to ensure proper function.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternatively, you may use silica gel packets to dry out your phone's camera lens. Fill a plastic bag with 10 to 20 packets, seal and leave overnight.

  • Never heat your phone with a hair dryer or microwave. This will permanently damage your phone and may result in electric shock or fire.
