Things You'll Need

  • Can of garbanzo beans
  • Food processor
  • 3 tbsp. of lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. cumin powder, salt, pepper and chili flakes
  • One minced garlic clove
  • Finely chopped cilantro
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • Pita bread and whole wheat crackers
  • Celery sticks and julienne carrots

      Use one can of garbanzo beans to prepare 1 cup of hummus. Drain the liquid from the garbanzo bean can. Rinse the beans with plain water and place in a bowl.

      Add the hummus seasonings. Mix 3 tbsp. of lemon juice, 1 tsp. each of cumin powder chili flakes, salt, pepper and one minced garlic clove.

      Put all the ingredients in a food processor. Add 1/4 cup water, place the lid over the food processor and run for three minutes, or until all the ingredients are pureed to a smooth paste.

      Pour the pureed garbanzo beans in a serving bowl. Garnish with 1 tsp. of finely chopped cilantro. Sprinkle 1 tsp. of olive oil before serving. Serve with pita bread, whole wheat crackers, celery sticks and julienne carrots.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the pureed garbanzo beans instead of a sandwich spread on toast, rolls and flat breads.

  • Store the leftover hummus in the refrigerator and consume within a week.
