Instructions

    • 1

Combine 1 gallon warm water with 2 cups soap flakes. Place this mixture in a large pan, and warm over low heat until the soap dissolves. Add the glycerin, if using, and remove from the heat.

    • 2

Allow the mixture to cool, and then add 1/2 cup lemon juice or white vinegar. Both work well for breaking down grease on your dishes. You may want to try both to see if you have a preference. If you would like the soap to have some kind of scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil. Mix it well, and store it in your gallon container.

    • 3

Use solid soap shavings, such as a grated bar of Ivory, instead of soap flakes. For this method, combine 2 cups of the soap shavings and 2 or 3 cups of hot water in a large bowl. Let it sit overnight, which will soften the soap. Stir the mixture until it is a smooth consistency, and then add 1/2 cup lemon juice or white vinegar. Store in a large, airtight container.

Use castile soap instead. Simply purchase a bottle of pure castile soap, available at many retailers. Combine 2 cups castile soap with 1/2 cup warm water in a container, such as an old dish soap bottle. Add essential oils if desired. Mix well, and it is ready for use.
