How to Make Friends in College While Living at Home

How to Make Friends in College While Living at Home thumbnail
Spending time on campus helps in making friends.

It is easy for college students living at home to feel disconnected to campus life. Students who live at home are not privy to the many social experiences of student housing. However, it is still possible to make friends in college without living in the dorms. Pushing yourself to try new things and making an extra effort to meet new people in the first year of college will pay off in the lifelong friendships you'll make.

Instructions

    • 1

Join clubs and student societies. Most colleges host a club fair in the first month of the school year in order to introduce new students to the different social and academic clubs. Choose a club or society that you're interested in and also choose one that is slightly out of your comfort zone. This will get you used to trying new things and allow you to make connections with potential friends.

Talk to your classmates. Strike up conversations with the people you sit next to in class and work on building up a friendship with them. Be honest about your desire to get more involved in campus life. Ask them if they know of any events or parties planned for that week and, if so, tell them you would like to join in the fun. Once you have established a strong enough classroom friendship, ask them for their phone numbers so they can text you and let you know when something fun is happening on campus.

    • 3

Participate in intramural sports. Ask your classmates if they plan on joining any intramural sports teams and ask to join in. Don't worry about your skill-level, as intramural sports are primarily social activities.

    • 4

Hang out on campus as much as possible. Instead of driving home between classes, spend time in the student center where you're likely to run into people you know from class. Use your time on campus as an opportunity to build upon the connections you have made in class.
