One form of velocity flow is the fluid flow velocity in pipes. Velocity along with pipe size helps determine the pressure the piping system experiences as fluid flows through it. Engineers use these parameters and others to design piping systems for various system configurations and setups.
Find the volume flow requirements in cubic meters per second, or "q". Refer to piping system design specifications and requirements.
Find the inside diameter of the pipe in units of meters. Refer to piping system design specifications and requirements.
Calculate the flow velocity using the formula: Flow velocity = (1.274 x q)/d^2. For example, if q is 480 cubic meters per second and pipe diameter is 0.6 meters:
Flow velocity = (1.274 x 480)/0.6^2 = 611.52/0.36 = 1,698 meters per second
