How to Retrieve the Photos from an iPhone

Your computer's communication with your iPhone is typically one-way -- syncing from your iTunes library on your computer to your iPhone. The photos and video you capture on your iPhone can't be synced from your iPhone to your computer. Aside from purchasing a third-party app from the iTunes App Store, there are two ways to transfer photos from your iPhone to your computer: You can email them to yourself, or transfer them over the iPhone's USB cable much as you would do with a digital camera.

  • Press the "Photos" icon on your iPhone.

  • Select the photo in your Camera Roll that you want to email.

  • Press the action button in the lower-left corner of the iPhone screen. It appears as a box with an arrow pointing out of it.

  • Press "Email Photo."

  • Enter the email address you want to send the photo to in the "To" field and write a subject in the "Subject" line, then press "Send."

  • Open the email program on your computer and select the email you sent from your iPhone.

  • Save the photo to your computer's hard drive.

USB Transfer (Windows)

  • Connect the iPhone's USB cable to the dock on your iPhone and to the USB port on your computer.

  • Select the iPhone drive in the list of drives displayed on your computer.

  • Open each folder in the "Internal Storage" folder until you reach the photos and videos stored on your iPhone.

  • Click and drag the photos to another location on your hard drive to copy them from your iPhone to your computer.

USB Transfer (Mac)

  • Connect the USB cable to the dock on your iPhone and to the USB port on your computer. iPhoto automatically launches on your Mac computer.

  • Select the photos you want to transfer to your Mac.

  • Click "Import Selected."
