Instructions

    • 1

Bake your cake following the directions on the box. Use a 18-by-13-by-1 1/2-inch sheet pan so that the cake is rectangular -- the shape of a flag.

    • 2

Allow the cake to cool after baking. You do not want to decorate a cake that is still hot because it can crumble and collapse. If you are in a hurry to decorate the cake, stick the cake into the refrigerator after pulling it from the oven to hasten the cooling process.

    • 3

Use a rubber spatula to apply the white icing onto the cake. Make sure you cover the entire top of the cake, including the sides.

    • 4

Wash your cartons of blueberries and raspberries. The fruit will be used to draw your American Flag, but people will also be eating the fruit, which is why you want to wash it first. Let the fruit dry.

    • 5

Use your blue cake gel to make a square in the top left corner of your rectangular cake. Try to keep the square as straight as possible. Then, fill in the square by making horizontal lines with the blue gel, leaving 1/4-inch between each line.

    • 6

Take your red cake gel and draw horizontal lines across the rectangle cake, outside of the blue square area. The lines should be 1/2-inch apart or a little more. The red lines should cover the sheet cake from the top to the very bottom.

    • 7

Fill in the cake with your fruit. Place blueberries along the blue lines inside of the square. Then, set the raspberries on top of all of the red lines that you made.

    • 8

Place your white chocolate morsels in the space between your red lines that are now topped with raspberries. Not only do the white chocolate morsels give the cake dimension, but they also add a sweet flavor to the cake.
