How to Edit QuickTime Video Using iMovie
Apple's iMovie is compatible with a number of video file types, including Quicktime movie files. By importing your Quicktime files into iMovie, you can make edits, add transitions and music and do any editing that you'd do with any other video file. If you're already familiar with how iMovie works, you should have no problem working with QuickTime video files within iMovie.

1
Open your video in the QuickTime player, then click "Window" and "Show Movie Info" to view what type of file it is. If the file has a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 extension, you'll need to convert it to another file type. Apple recommends using a "third-party" file converter to convert the file to a different file type, such as MPEG-4. If you see other file extensions, such as ".mov" or ".mp4," you should have no problem importing the footage.

2
Open iMovie and create a new project by clicking "File," then "New Project."

3
Import your footage into iMovie by clicking "File" then "Import" then "File." Select the video file from the files and folders on your computer. Depending on the size of your video, the import may take several minutes. The video will appear in your iMovie Clips pane when it's imported.

4
Click on the video file in the Clips pane and highlight one section you want to use in the video. You can use the Video Viewer pane in the top right section of iMovie to see which parts you're highlighting.
-
5
Drag the desired section to the Timeline of iMovie. Repeat Step four to select each piece of video you want to use, then drag it to the Timeline and place it before or after the other clips already there.
-
6
Click on the Effects icons under the Video Viewer to open up the various titles, transitions and sound effects available in iMovie. Click on desired effects and drag them to the Timeline where you want them to appear.
