How to Write up a Contract for Selling a Vehicle
When you write a contract for selling a vehicle it is officially called a bill of sale. The bill of sale contract outlines all of the major terms of the vehicle purchase and must be signed by both parties. Date the contract using the same date that you are planning to transfer ownership (giving the keys to the buyer and retrieving the payment in exchange). List the full name, address and phone number of both the seller and buyer at the top or bottom of the agreement. You can also add a line for the buyer to enter his driver's license number, though this information isn't normally required.

List the intentions of the agreement, namely that you're transferring ownership of a vehicle to the named buyer. Identify the selling price on which you and the buyer settled.

Describe the car that you're selling. Include a description of the make, model, year, color and vehicle identification number (VIN). Enter the current mileage reading on the contract as well.

Enter the terms of any loan agreement associated with the car sale. If applicable, include the loan amount, interest rate, monthly payment and number of months for repayment.

Discuss the warranty policy (if applicable), such as "as is" or "90-day mechanical warranty."

Close the letter by confirming that you agree to complete all terms of this agreement as does the buyer. Confirm that all information included in the contract is true to the best of your knowledge.

Sign and notarize the sales contract with the buyer. Receive payment and then transfer the contract along with the original of the title to the buyer so that he can properly register the car. Keep a copy of the vehicle sales contract for your own records as well.
