How to Hook Up an Ethernet Cord to a Router
When you establish a home network, connecting a router to your modem will allow you to connect multiple computers, sharing your Internet connection between the computers. When you do not have wireless connections, Ethernet cables connect your computer to the router. Attaching the Ethernet cable to the router and computer properly will ensure that the devices communicate properly to give you access to your internal network and internet.

Set up your router, plug in the power adapter and plug it into the wall outlet.

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer. The location of the port will vary based on the model of your computer, but Ethernet cable ends are a unique size and cannot be plugged into a port other than the Ethernet port designed for them.

Plug the Ethernet cable from your modem into the back of the router in the port labeled "Interne.t" Plug the opposite end of the Ethernet cable from your computer into the first open "Computer" port, typically marked with either "1" or a computer image with a "1" inside.

Check the indicator light on the router to ensure that the "Internet" light is illuminated, indicating an active internet connection. Turn on your computer and confirm that the computer connectivity light on the front of the router illuminates. The indicator lights on the router confirm that the cables are attached properly.

Tips & Warnings
Some modems require a complete reset or power cycle to recognize a router when you add it to the network. Restart the modem with the router connected and turned on.
