How to Tie Goats

How to Tie Goats thumbnail
Live goats are used in the goat-tying events held at rodeos.

Goat tying is a sporting event that is held at rodeos. While it is not a professional sport, goat tying competitions take place in high school and college rodeos across the United States. Young boys and girls play the sport, which involves riding a horse up to a goat and then dismounting to tie three of its legs together using twine. The winner is the competitor who ties the goat in the shortest time. Penalties are given if the goat escapes the rope within six seconds of being tied or if the horse crosses the rope that is tied to the goat.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer a stake into the ground so that it holds firm. Use rope to tether the goat to the stake.

    • 2

Put a bundle of twine over one shoulder and under your arm. Mount the horse and ride as fast as possible at the goat.

    • 3

Before you reach the rope between the goat and the stake, quickly dismount the horse and run towards the goat.

    • 4

When you reach the goat, you must tie three of its legs together using twine. Grab two of its legs and pull up quickly so that the goat is upside down.

    • 5

Bring your hands together and hold the goat's two legs with one hand. Use your free hand to pull in a third leg, and then hold all three with one hand.

    • 6

Quickly wrap twine around the three legs that are held together. Tie a knot in the twine so that the rope is fastened around the goat's legs and it cannot break free.

    • 7

Put the goat down on the ground and walk away from it. If the goat does not free itself within six seconds, the goat tie is a success.
