An IP (Internet protocol) address is a numerical identification that is assigned to devices in a computer network. If someone gains access to your IP address they can maliciously attack your computer or home network, or even obtain private information such as credit card numbers. Just like a computer, the PlayStation 3 is also susceptible to such attacks. One way to add more security to your PS3 and keep your private information safe is by using a proxy server. A proxy server act as a gateway between your PS3 and the Internet, preventing hackers from gaining access to your network's IP address.

Things You'll Need:

  • Proxy Server Address
  • Playstation 3
  • Internet Connection

Obtain a proxy server address and write it down on a piece of paper. A list of proxy servers is available in the Resource section of this article.

Turn on your PS3 and choose the "Settings" option from the "XBM" menu. Go to the "Network Settings" option and press the "X" button on the PS3 controller.

Select "Internet Connection" and then select "Enabled." Go to "Internet Connection Settings" and press the "X" button on your controller. Choose "Yes" and then select "Custom." When you are prompted to choose a connection method, select "Wireless."

Select "Scan" and select your network's SSID.The SSID, also known as service set identifier, is the name given to the access point of your home network. Once you've selected the correct SSID, press the right-direction button on your PS3 controller.

Select your network's security settings under the "WLAN Security Setting" and press the "X" button to enter your network's encryption key.

Select "Automatic" under the "IP Address Setting" to allow your PS3 to automatically obtain your network's IP Address. Select "Automatic" again for both the "DNS Setting" and "MTU" options.

Select "Use" under "Proxy Server." Enter the IP address and Port number provided to you by your proxy server and press the right-direction button on your PS3 controller to save your changes.
