How to Reinstall a Mac System
Apple Mac computers running the Mac OS X operating system are similar to any other computer in that it is beneficial to completely reinstall the system software occasionally to receive a fresh start. All computers begin to slow down after a period of time when more software is installed on the computer. Many of these programs install features in the background that slow down the computer. You can reinstall a Mac system to restore the computer to its full operating speed.

Insert the Mac OS X install disc into the disc drive, then restart the computer.

Press and hold the "C" key on the keyboard until the computer begins to boot from the disc.

Click the "Next" arrow.

Click "Continue."

Click the Mac's hard drive icon, then click "Install." The installation process usually takes approximately 20 minutes.

Click the "Restart" button when it appears on the screen.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to download and install the latest system updates after the Mac has been reinstalled. Click the "Apple" logo in the upper-left corner of the screen, then click "Software Update."
This process erases existing data on the computer. Be sure to have a backup of any important data files, such as documents and pictures, before proceeding. An Apple "Time Machine" backup to an external hard drive is recommended.
