How to Remove the Keyboard From an iMac

If you need to move your iMac, a desktop computer made by Apple, from one location to another, you might want to first disconnect the keyboard. You might also want to remove the keyboard temporarily so you can use it with a different computer. Current iMacs come with a wireless keyboard, and you can also use a keyboard that connects to a USB port on the back of the iMac. You can easily remove the keyboard from your iMac. You do not need to turn off the computer to remove the keyboard.

  • Unplug the USB cable connector from the USB port on your keyboard if you are using a wired keyboard.

  • Unplug the keyboard's USB cable from the USB port on the back of your iMac.

  • Press the "On/Off" switch on the side of the Apple wireless keyboard to turn it off. Its green light turns on for a few seconds, and then goes off.

  • Click the "Apple" logo from the Finder menu on your iMac, and then click "System Preferences. Click "Bluetooth." Click "Apple Wireless Keyboard" on the left side of the Bluetooth preferences pane to select it.

  • Click the minus button in the lower left corner of the preferences pane to delete the keyboard from the list. The wireless keyboard is now no longer paired with your iMac.
