Changing the nameserver of your subdomain is as easy as changing it for your domain.

When you want a subdomain on your server, such as for a blog or online store to be hosted on a different server, change the nameserver of the subdomain. Changing your nameserver is also useful if you have limited space with a free hosting service and need more to host media, images and even other webpages.

Things You'll Need

  • Access to domain manger of subdomain
  • Access to domain or DNS manager of hosting server

Instructions

  1. Get Hosting Information

    • 1

In the hosting control panel, locate your domain manager.

    • 2

In the domain manager, look for where the records are kept. Each domain name on your server has a record.

    • 3

Get the nameserver (you need 2) and IP addresses (optional). It is in this format:

      ns1.nameserver1.com

      ns2.nameserver2.com

      127.1.1.0 (format of IP address)

    Point Hosting Nameserver to Subdomain

    • 4

Add a new record to your hosting server. This name should be the name of your subdomain. Note the nameserver assigned to it.

    • 5

Go to your subdomain manager (the one hosted on another server).

    • 6

Navigate to the domain manger of your subdomain.

    • 7

Select to change the record for the subdomain. Change the nameserver to the ns.nameofserver1.com and ns.nameofserver2.com of your hosting server. Change the IP address, if asked for it. Your subdomain now points to a new server.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may take up to 36 hours for your subdomain to be functional, so you may not see anything right away.
