Everyone feels embarrassed from time to time.

Embarrassment is a normal feeling that stems from our desire to be accepted by society. When we do or see something that is silly, socially unacceptable or awkward, it is natural to feel embarrassed. However, in highly self-conscious individuals, extreme or frequent feelings of embarrassment can hinder the development of a fulfilling, enjoyable social life. If you become embarrassed very easily, it may be useful to learn a few tricks for keeping the feeling in-check when necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the embarrassing event in perspective. While you may feel like you will never be able to show your face in public again, recognize that most people will forget what happened long before you stop blushing.

    • 2

Think about a time when someone close to you did something embarrassing. Try to remember how you responded. You were probably understanding, didn't exacerbate their humiliation and thought none the worse of them. When you are embarrassed, it can be easy to forget that people are usually quite empathetic.

    • 3

Smile and laugh. Instead of thinking about what an idiot you were, find some humor in the situation. Choose to focus on this, rather than how embarrassed you feel.

    • 4

Take a few deep breaths. Give yourself permission to regain your composure and move past your embarrassment. You do not need to continue to apologize, explain or dwell on what happened. Return to whatever you were doing before you felt embarrassed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If a fear of embarrassment prevents you from enjoying social interactions, speak to a counselor. You may be suffering from social anxiety disorder.
