Written Instructions for the Line Dance for Alan Jackson's "Good Time"

Written Instructions for the Line Dance for Alan Jackson's "Good Time" thumbnail
The "Good Times" line dance is simple and fun to learn.

Alan Jackson's song "Good Times" inspired a music video with the world's longest line dance in 2008. With thousands of dancers coming out to be filmed doing the line dance, the steps were immortalized and are now replicated in line dance clubs throughout the nation. Choreographed by Jenny Cain, a long-time choreographer in the country-Western industry, the original need to teach a dance quickly to so many different experience levels for the video led to a permanent and brief 40 counts of movement. Using written instructions, anyone can master the "Good Times" line dance.

Instructions

    • 1

Change into comfortable clothes that you can easily move in -- no jeans, sneakers or tight-fitting pieces. Download or purchase Alan Jackson's "Good Times," and upload it to your MP3 player or burn to a CD.

    • 2

Begin the dance by walking forward using toe/heel steps. Start with the right foot and walk toe, heel with the right, toe, heel with the left. Repeat until you have completed the right, left, right, left sequence to eight counts. Next, side step with your right foot going to the right, and then slide back together with the left foot. Repeat.

    • 3

Continue the dance with a grapevine to the right with a spin. Step out with your right foot, and spin one full turn to the right. Repeat. End with a clap. Repeat this sequence again, this time to the left.

    • 4

Lift your right knee up and down, and then repeat with your left knee. Repeat knee raises, doing each one at a slight angle instead of head on. Start to slowly travel backward as you lift and step, keeping this up for six counts.

    • 5

Jump in place and land with your feet crossed right over left. Jump again, turning one quarter of a turn to your left, landing with your feet apart. Cha cha forward to the right, and then lunge forward, rock and return to original position. Repeat, this time cha cha going backward to the left. Lunge and rock reaching backward as well.

    • 6

Finally, shimmy your right foot out to the right side, and bring your left foot inward. Repeat twice. A "shimmy" is simply a bouncing step, and you may make this as fun or subtle as you wish.
