How to Dress as an 80's Prom Queen for Halloween

Halloween is the one day of the year that adults and children alike can let loose and pretend to be someone else, even a reflection of a past life. A prom queen from the 1980s is an inexpensive costume that can be well thought out over several weeks or thrown together on the fly for a last minute party. All of the items required for a '80s prom queen costume are available at a local thrift store, or even your own closet.

Instructions

    • 1

Raid the back of your closet, a friend's closet or a local thrift shop to find a prom dress straight from the 1980s. For a dramatic effect, choose a look that is brightly colored and comes complete with plenty of sequins, lace and puffy sleeves.

    • 2

Locate a pair of high heels pumps that are the same color as your dress. It was a big trend in the 1980s to match the shoe color with the color of the prom dress. If you cannot find a match, purchase a pair of shoes that can be died and bring them to a dress shop or shoe store to have them colored.

    • 3

Wear big costume jewelry. Choose a pair of large earrings, a gaudy necklace and stacks of bracelets that feature rhinestones, which was a look sported by many prom queens during this decade.

    • 4

Tease your hair and bangs as high as possible. Ask a friend to help crimp your entire head of hair and with the help of extra hold hair spray, make your hair reach new heights. Finish off the hair with a layer of spray glitter and a rhinestone encrusted tiara or a large bow.

    • 5

Cover your face with makeup looks straight out of the 1980s. Wear brightly colored blue eye shadow, red lips and pink blush. Finish the look with a set of fake eyelashes and purple or blue mascara.

    • 6

Add a few finishing touches to let everyone know that you are the prom queen. Wear a sash and carry around a scepter. Wave at your loyal subjects as you walk around using catch phrases from the day, such as "like totally bogus" or " as if".

Tips & Warnings

  • Turn a typical 1980s prom queen outfit into something more ghoulish by adding a few touches such as vampire teeth, a ripped blood splattered dress or zombie makeup.

  • Go to libraries and look at magazines and rent movies from that decade to see the fashions yourself. These pictures will provide inspiration as you put together your whole look.
