How to Write a Letter of Appreciation to a High School Principal

Save

If you have an amazing principal who has supported you throughout your time in high school, writing her an appreciation letter is a great was to show how thankful you are. The quality of your letter will send a strong message about how appreciative you actually are, so don't just throw together the first couple of thoughts that come to mind. A meaningful letter starts with solid planning and is followed by several drafts and revisions. When crafting your letter, be thoughtful, specific and concise.

  • Brainstorm a list of things that you appreciate about your principal. Think of specific things that your principal has said or done to help and encourage you. For example, you might jot down, "She listened carefully to me when we talked about the problems I was having in English class. She never interrupted and really understood my concerns." This is much more meaningful and concise than saying, "She is a good listener."

  • Narrow your list down to the most important three or four things that you appreciate about your principal. These are what you will talk about in the letter.

  • Write a rough draft of your appreciation letter. Begin by thanking your principal and telling him how valuable he has been to your high school education in general. Next, write about the specific examples you chose from your list. In each instance, include the details of the situation and tell him how his involvement positively affected you. Close the letter with another well-worded thank you.

  • Revise the letter to improve word usage, sentences and overall flow.

  • Ask a friend to edit and revise your letter. You should choose someone whose writing you admire, since a strong writer will be more likely to pick up on any errors.

  • Write the final draft of the letter incorporating any corrections or comments from your editor.

  • Place the letter in an envelope addressed to your principal. Leave it with her secretary or in her school mailbox.
