How to Get a Military Dependent ID Card

How to Get a Military Dependent ID Card thumbnail
Dependents need their military ID card to use base facilities.

Military dependents are eligible to hold a military ID, which is required to access facilities such as exchange stores, commissaries and theaters on military installations. A military ID is also required at medical care facilities and to be covered by TRICARE. Eligible dependents include spouses, children under 21 and dependent parents of service members. Once the sponsor has enrolled his or her dependents in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS), they can go about obtaining their dependent military ID card.

Instructions

    • 1

      Fill out DD Form 1172.

    • 2

Turn the form in at any military installation with a Real Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS) site. You can locate a RAPIDS site by using the RAPIDS site locator website. You will need to be accompanied by your sponsor unless you have their power of attorney. You will also need to bring birth certificates and photo IDs for each dependent, and your marriage certificate if you are a spouse.

    • 3

Keep your military ID safe -- you will need to have it on you in order to enter military installations and to use the facilities on base.
