How to Save African Children

How to Save African Children thumbnail
A seemingly small charitable act can mean the world to a needy African child.

According to a 2001 report by the United Nations, poverty, war, and disease are among the major factors threatening the lives and futures of African children. The report also cited the lack of aid from African governments, as well as other countries, as contributing to the gap between the well-being of African children and children of other nations. Attempting to help and save these kids from their circumstances may seem overwhelming at first thought, but there are ways that you can help.

Instructions

    • 1

Volunteer your time to an organization that travels to Africa to help children. These charitable groups offer mission trips of varying lengths. Sign up for a few weeks, months, or even a year. During your time in Africa, you will be able to directly impact the lives of the children there. Mission groups routinely offer opportunities to get involved with working in, or forming schools, providing childcare to younger children, medical center and hospital support, and counseling. These hands-on efforts contribute in a positive and lasting way to the lives of the children and improve their odds of a better future.

Donate money and/or physical items to an organization that helps children in Africa. Travel to Africa is not a realistic possibility for most people. You can still provide help from your home area by donating money, books, clothing, shoes, and any items of assistance to organizations that do work with African children. Submit donations as an individual or in a group context. To donate as a group, reach out to members of your church, school, or community to find others who are interested in financially helping African children. Your group can then convene on a regular basis to agree on where funds will be sent.

    • 3

Organize fundraising activities to benefit African children's charities. This method of helping children is especially relevant if you have assembled a group committed to supporting African child charities. Popular fundraising activities include car washes, bake sales, and garage sales. Ultimately, any activity that raises money can be used. Many major corporations offer fundraising packages of their products which allow you to sell brand name, trusted products at a slightly higher than purchase price, creating profit for your cause.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all charities are created equally. Investigate the reputation and organizational efficiency of the funds that the charity receives before making donations.

  • When sending physical items to Africa, it is best to work in conjunction with an organization or charity with established means and methods of doing so. Restrictions on shipping into certain areas of Africa and corruption can prevent your well-intended gifts from reaching needy children.
