How to Get Rayquaza Without Cheats in "Emerald"

In "Pokemon Emerald," Rayquaza, the game's mascot, is a Dragon- and Flying-type Pokemon with high offensive power. You have a chance to capture the beast after it quells the fighting between Groudon and Kyogre, its feuding relatives. Rayquaza will rest atop Sky Pillar, an ancient island-based tower in the Hoenn Region. If you're willing to scale the crumbling tower and attempt to subdue the legendary Pokemon, it will lend you its power in future battles.

Instructions

    • 1

Travel to Pacifidlog Town, a small community built on wooden rafts.

    • 2

Use Surf to move east to Route 131. Travel along the northern end of the route until you find a cave on a beach.

    • 3

Navigate through the short tunnel until you emerge in front of Sky Pillar. Go inside.

    • 4

Climb to the top of Sky Pillar. On the second and fourth stories, the floors are weak, so the tile will give way as you step on it. Use the speedy Mach Bike to traverse the unstable ground.

    • 5

Save the game when you see Rayquaza on the top floor. Engage the beast when you're ready.

    • 6

Use attacks to lower Rayquaza's health. The Pokemon is at level 70, so you'll need to use your strongest moves to weaken it. Rayquaza is vulnerable to Rock-, Ice- and Dragon-type attacks. Fighting-, Bug-, Fire-, Water-, Grass- and Ground-type attacks will have little to no effect on it.

    • 7

Use a move that can either put Rayquaza to sleep or paralyze it. Hypnosis and Thunder Wave are two options.

    • 8

Throw Ultra Balls to capture the beast. You may need to throw a lot of them before Rayquaza drops his stubborn streak, so stock up on the items. Alternatively, you can use your Master Ball, which will capture any wild Pokemon on the first throw.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you accidentally knock out Rayquaza during battle, restart the game to return to your last save point.

  • Rayquaza will attack with Outrage, Fly and Extreme Speed. In addition, it can heal its wounds by using Rest.

  • Sky Pillar contains other wild Pokemon in addition to Rayquaza. Use Repel if you don't want to wear your team out in battles before reaching the top of the tower.
