How to Use Tab Names as Variables in Excel

If you are working in Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet program, then you may want to use key words as variables within your spreadsheet. Excel allows you to create several spreadsheets within one file that are separated by tabs. You can name these tabs individually. Type the name of the tab in the Excel variable boxes.

  • Open your Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

  • Locate the tabs at the bottom right-hand corner of the page. You should have several, and they should be named. By default, they are named "Sheet 1," "Sheet 2" and "Sheet 3." To change the name of the tab, double-click on it, type a new name and click the next tab.

  • Click on the "FX" box on your toolbar. Type the name of your tab in the cell labeled A1. Press "Enter." Repeat Step 3 until all of your tab names have been entered into different cells.
