How to Connect to a Network Printer if Running Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Linux-based, open source operating system that is free to download from the Ubuntu site. Ubuntu is user-friendly and performing tasks like installing a network printer are straightforward and usually take only minutes to complete. Before adding the network printer in Ubuntu, make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the network. Then start the Ubuntu "Printing" wizard and follow the onscreen instructions.

Instructions

1. Click the "System" option on the top taskbar in Ubuntu.

2. Click the "Administration" option in the System menu.

3. Click the "Printing" option to start the Printing wizard.

4. Click the "New" button and then click "Network Printer" to expand. Click "Forward."

5. Type the Administrator password and then click "Continue." All printers connected to the network should be detected. Select the desired printer from the list and click "Apply." The network printer is added to Ubuntu. If the printer is not automatically detected, proceed to the next step.

6. Type the printer path, with the computer name, if the printer is connected to another networked computer, for example: "\\computer\printer". Click "Forward."

7. Select the printer manufacturer from the first drop-down box.

8. Select the printer model from the second drop-down box.

9. Type a description for the printer in the "Description" input box, if desired.

10. Click "Apply." The network printer is added to Ubuntu.

11. Print a test page by right-clicking on the newly added printer in the "Printers" list and selecting "Print Test Page."
