How to Make Website Phone Numbers Clickable Using HTML

If your customers visit your website from a smartphone or a computer with a program like Skype, you can make it easier for them to contact you by making your phone number clickable. You can do this by inserting just a single HTML tag in any Web page. Once the code is in place, smartphone users can simply tap the number on your website to automatically call you. No longer do they need to add your phone number to their contacts or memorize it in order to call.

Things You'll Need

  • Code editor or Notepad
  • FTP client
  • Download the HTML file from your website to your computer using your preferred FTP client. Right-click the file and select "Open With." From the drop-down menu select an HTML editor or plain text editor like Notepad.

  • Highlight the following code and press "Ctrl-C" to copy it to your computer's clipboard: <a href=”tel:X-XXX-XXX-XXXX”>Link text</a>

  • Insert the cursor where you want the telephone link to appear on your Web page and press "Ctrl-V" to paste the HTML code. Replace X-XXX-XXX-XXXX with the 10-digit phone number preceded by the 1 digit country code.

  • Replace “Link text” with the text for the link such as “Call me” or the actual phone number.

  • Save the HTML code and upload it to your site directory via FTP client. If the FTP client warns you that you will overwrite the existing file, select "Overwrite" or "Proceed."

Tips & Warnings

  • Skype offers a free plugin for all major browsers which automatically makes text numbers clickable. These numbers open the Skype software and allow you to make calls.
