How to Decorate Plates for Halloween With Porcelain Glaze

Choose simple orange and black patterns for plates you can use year-round.

If you are planning a Halloween party, you might be stumped over what type of decorations to use. Sure, there are lots of paper items available at any party supply store. But what if you want to throw a celebration that is a little more upscale? Painting your own ceramic plates using ceramic or porcelain paints is a way to create showier dishes on which to serve your food. Better still, by using porcelain glaze and heat to seal each plate, you can use them again and again.

Things You'll Need

• Adhesive remover
• Pencil
• Porcelain paints
• Paintbrushes
• Cloths
• Oven
• Porcelain glaze

Instructions

1. Wash your plates with water. Apply an adhesive removing product to any stickers or labels and remove them. Rinse off any residue and dry the plates well.

2. Plan a design for your plates. Consider traditional Halloween symbols such as jack-o-lanterns, candy corn and black cats. Sketch out your design on each plate, using a pencil.

3. Paint in your design using the porcelain paint and a variety of paintbrushes. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any mistakes. Let the first layers of paint dry before adding more to darken the color.

4. Bake the plates according to the time and temperature recommended by your particular paint. Apply clear porcelain glaze evenly all over each plate with a soft-bristled paintbrush. Follow the glaze directions for baking the plates again to solidify the glaze.
