How to Text With Your Mac

Save

Sending a text message is a fast way to communicate between cell phones if you need a quick reply or response. The cost of sending a text message may be per message, depending upon your cell phone plan, or you may have a plan with an monthly allotment of text messages for a set price. Save money by sending text messages through your e-mail account using your Mac computer. It is free for you, but the receiver may incur a charge depending upon his or her text message plan.

  • Open your Internet browser on your Macintosh computer.

  • Access your e-mail account and log in with your user name and password.

  • Open the icon to compose a new e-mail.

  • Type the cell phone's e-mail address into the "To:" field. The e-mail address will be the 10-digit cell phone number followed by the cell phone provider's correct way to format the e-mail address. For example, if the recipient has Boost Mobile, you enter number@myboostmobile.com. (1234567890@myboostmobile.com)

  • Enter a message into the e-mail field not to exceed 160 characters.

  • Press "Send." The e-mail from your Macintosh computer will arrive as a text message to the recipient's cell phone shortly. Any replies to the message will go to your e-mail account.
