How to Knit a Leaf Pattern

Save

Simple shapes in nature are often recreated by human hands. This pattern creates a sample swatch of miniature leaf pattern using easy lace-knitting techniques. You can use the pattern to create a border, to insert a panel in a garment or to create an all-over design.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Knitting needles
  • Cast on 19 stitches. This sample has three repeats. The miniature leaf pattern is a multiple of six stitches, plus one.

  • Purl every stitch. This is the wrong side, and you purl every wrong-side row.

  • Knit the first stitch -- row two. Repeat this pattern across the row: Knit two stitches together (K2tog), yarn over (YO), knit one (K1), YO, slip slip knit (SSK), K1. Purl the next row.

  • Knit the first two stitches together. Repeat this pattern for row four to the last six stitches: YO, K3, YO, slip two stitches knit-wise, K1, pass the two slipped stitches over (P2SSO). YO, K3, YO, SSK. Purl the next row.

  • Knit the first stitch -- row six. Repeat this pattern across the row: YO, SSK, K2tog, YO, K1. Purl the next (wrong-side) row.

  • Knit the first two stitches for row eight. Repeat this pattern until you have seven stitches left: YO, slip two stitches knit-wise, K1, P2SSO, YO, K3. For the last seven stitches: YO, slip two stitches knit-wise, K1, P2SSO, YO, K2.
