Coming up with a specific, challenging thesis is crucial for creating a strong, debatable paper. If your thesis is too broad or not arguable, the rest of your paper will suffer. Your thesis statement should give the reader a clear take on your stance on an issue, as well as how you plan to argue for or against the issue. When writing a thesis on teenagers and their curfews, find something new on the subject matter that you can support via the rest of your paper.
Things You'll Need
- Research materials
Make a list of the things that intrigue you most about teenagers and their curfews. Don't censor yourself as you create this list. Write down anything that pops into your head. For example, write down things such as effectiveness, specific times, violations, countries that have official curfews or curfews in history.
Circle the issues that interest you the most and research them. Spend several days reading academic, newspaper and magazine articles on these issues. Write down your discoveries.
Write a simple thesis based on your discoveries. For example, if you have discovered that curfews are most effective with teenagers from two-parent families, write: "Curfews are most effective with teenagers from two-parent families."
Rewrite your thesis, changing the wording to make it stronger and more specific. For example, you could change, "Curfews are most effective with teenagers from two-parent families," to, "Teenagers from two-parent families are more likely to obey curfews than teenagers from single-parent families."
Reread your thesis, checking to see that it is debatable and not a simple statement of fact. For example, a bad thesis statement might be, "Curfews set the hour which teens must be home by." This states the obvious and does not present an argument. An original thesis should challenge the mind and present an argument that not everyone necessarily agrees with.
