How to Verify Social Security Benefits

Social Security provides income and medical insurance for people who are at least age 62 and retired or disabled. People who receive Social Security benefits get a statement every month detailing their benefits and monthly payment. If you lose your statement, it may be hard to complete applications that require information about your income. However, the Social Security Administration provides benefit verification to beneficiaries over the phone.

  • Call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213. You must call between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday, to speak to a representative who can assist you.

  • Tell the representative you want to verify your benefits. Give her your name, Social Security number, date of birth and address to confirm your identity.

  • Listen as the representative lists the benefits you are receiving and tells you the monthly payment amount.

  • Request written proof of your benefits if you need income verification for a loan, social services or other reason. It should arrive by mail within 10 days.
