How Can I Get Someone to Stop Calling If I'm on the Do Not Call List?

Telemarketing calls at all times of the day can be annoying. Thankfully, the Federal Trade Commission created the National Do Not Call Registry to give consumers the choice of receiving these type of phone calls. Once you have registered your number on this registry, telemarketers have 31 days to stop calling you. If you're still receiving calls from telemarketers who you believe are covered by the Do Not Call Registry after that time, then you can file a complaint by phone or online.The complaint sent against the telemarketers will help the FTC investigate the company and possibly lead to legal action.

Things You'll Need

  • Business phone number
  • Business name
  • Date and time of unwanted calls
  • Check to ensure your phone number is still listed on the National Do Not Call Registry. Call 888-382-1220 and follow the system prompts to verify the information (you may be redirected to a new number based on your area code) or go online at donotcall.gov, and click on the link "Verify A Registration" to verify online. There are a number of reasons why your number can be removed from the registry. These reasons could include your number being disconnected and reconnected, changing the name on your account, or changing your service plan.

  • Register your number if it is no longer registered. You can do so online at donotcall.gov by selecting "Register A Phone Number" or by calling 888-382-1220, and follow system prompts.

  • File a complaint with the FTC online at donotcall.gov if you are registered and it has been 31 days since your registration. Select the "File A Complaint" link located on the left side of the computer screen. Review the terms and conditions of your complaint. Please note, calls from political organizations, telephone surveyors and charities are not covered by this registry.

  • Select the "Continue" button to complete the form online. Enter your phone number, the date you received the call, the time and whether the call you received was a recording.

  • Complete step two of the online form by providing the company's phone number and its business name. Answer a few voluntary questions, provide your phone number and mailing address so you can be contacted if the FTC investigator has more questions.

  • Include any additional comments in the comment section. Submit the form to process your complaint. You can also file a complaint by phone by calling 888-382-1220. Follow the system prompts.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will still continue to receive calls from companies that you have an existing business relationship with, unless you request that it stops calling you. According to the FTC, a company may call you for up to 18 months after you make a purchase or three months after you submit an inquiry or application.
