1
Plan the island first with thorough detail. Consider what will be stored within the island such as dishwashers or trash cans. Decide if you need easy access to cupboard space for pots and pans and whether you should include any electricity outlets.
-
2
Purchase the countertop you require. If choosing a custom countertop made of a material such as granite or other type of stone then you need to allow several weeks for it to be made. Do this before anything else so you are not left waiting with a frame but no countertop on your kitchen island.

3
Create a frame for your kitchen island using plywood. Leave spaces for cupboards and kitchen equipment like dishwashers where appropriate. Cut a piece of plywood 4 inches shorter than the countertop that's on order. Using nails and glue, place this over the top of the frame for the countertop to sit on.

4
Install the countertop. Make sure the top fits perfectly and is the right size. If you are installing a top like granite then it will be heavy enough to not need securing in place. If using a wooden countertop, it will need securing into place using nails or very strong water-based adhesive.
-
5
Attach the cabinet cupboards and drawers to the frame. Attach any hardware such as handles and hinges. Give the frame a coat of paint if desired or a treatment with varnish to stop general wear and tear.
