Instructions

    • 1

Ensure you have all necessary items for the diaper change before beginning the process, since you can't leave the baby alone.

    • 2

Lay your little one on either a changing table or a changing pad, depending on where you are. Most diaper bags come with a changing pad inside for use when you're away from home. Always use this pad to protect the baby from lying on an unknown surface and to protect the surface from whatever might be in the baby's diaper.

    • 3

Hand your child a small toy to help keep her little hands busy during the diaper change.

    • 4

Remove the baby's clothing from the waist down. Often, depending on the style of clothing the baby is wearing, you may have to remove everything the child is wearing. Of course, if the clothing is soiled, remove everything and set it aside.

    • 5

Unhook the diaper on each side. Use one hand to hold the baby's feet in the air and pull the diaper downward, wiping as much of the mess as you can from baby's bottom with the diaper. Set aside.

    • 6

Wipe the baby's genital area and bottom using as many baby wipes as necessary until the entire area is feces-free. Always wipe from front to back for little girls to help prevent bacterial infections. Place soiled wipes on top of diaper you previously laid aside.

    • 7

Open a new diaper and place underneath your baby's bottom with the adhesive pieces laying underneath the baby.

    • 8

Use diaper rash cream if any sort of redness or rashes are present. Squirt a small amount onto your fingers and rub gently in the areas where the rash appears. Use a baby wipe to clean your fingers and place it on the soiled diaper, as well.

    • 9

Pull the front of the diaper over your baby and pull each side of the diaper up, loosening the tabs and securing them at the front of the diaper. Be sure the diaper is secure, but don't make it so tight it's uncomfortable for baby.

    • 10

Place clean clothes, or the clothes you removed, back on baby.

    • 11

Roll the diaper into a ball ad secure it with the adhesive on either side of the diaper. Throw the stinky diaper away by placing it in either a receptacle designed for diaper disposal or in another bag before throwing in the trash to help prevent the smell from permeating the area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you've removed the diaper, lay it as far away from baby as possible so the baby can't touch it.
