How to Cut Wheat With a Scythe
Scythes are effective harvesting tools for cutting wheat and other stalky plants. This tool does not require much skill and is a cost-effective alternative to using more modern machinery. Sharpen your blade using the sharpening stone. Additional sharpening will be required as the blade becomes dull.

Grab the middle handle of the scythe with your right hand and the top handle with your left hand. Place the blade low to the ground.

Swing the blade briskly from right to left using a twisting motion with your arms and body. Make sure the blade does not touch any dirt or rocks; this will rapidly dull the blade. Only attempt to cut a narrow section at any given time. The cut wheat plant will fall to the ground.

Periodically check the blade for sharpness. Use the sharpening stone as needed.

First-time users generally attempt to cut too much at once. A sharp blade that cuts only narrow strips will require far less effort for the more experienced user.
Before using your scythe, be sure to check that all parts are securely fastened to avoid injury. Use gloves while sharpening the blade and cutting.
