How to Play "Kotor 1" on Windows Vista

Vista users have found that running KOTOR and KOTOR II can be a challenge. Numerous errors, crashes and other problems plague their game. The number of forum threads about this topic is immense. Some people have no problem running the game with Vista at all. If you aren't one of those lucky few, however, a series of fixes is available. Sadly, none of the fixes available work for every user. Some have to use a combination of several fixes. Trial and error is really the only way to find out if the fix will work with your system.

  1. Compatabiliity Mode

    • 1

      Uninstall KOTOR.

      Download SecuROM's updated swkotor.exe file (swkotor.zip), the patch and the replacement mss32.dll file.

      Change the compatibility mode for setup.exe. To do this, open up "Computer," right-click on your DVD drive and select "Explore." Right-click on "setup.exe." Select "Properties" and then "Compatibility." Select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2(SP2)." Also, click the box next to "Run as administrator." Click on "Apply" and then "OK."

      Run the install program by double-clicking the "setup.exe" file for which you've just changed the compatibility.

      Change the compatibility for the patch by right-clicking on the file, selecting "Properties," "Compatibility" and "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2(SP2)." Install the game patches by double-clicking on the patch file(s) you've downloaded and changed the compatibility for.

      Right-click on the "SWKotOR" folder (usually C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR), select "Properties" and make sure that the box next to "Read Only" is unchecked, then hit "Apply." Select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files."

      Replace the mss32.dll file in the SWKotOR folder with the downloaded version.

      Extract the "swkotor.zip" file to your SWKotOR directory (usually C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR). Right-click on the updated "swkotor.exe" file and make sure that it is set to run in Windows XP compatibility mode.

      Right-click on the KOTOR shortcut and select "Properties." Select the "Compatibility" tab, then set the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Also, make sure that "Run as Administrator" is selected.

    Other Options

      Download and install DirectX 9.0c.

      Download and install new drivers for your video card. Drivers are available from nVidia or AMD directly (See Resources).

      Run the game without patching.

      Run the game in an XP emulator or virtual XP environment.

      Try any of the fixes in the instructions above on their own. Some users find that just the new drivers, secuROM fix or compatibility mode changes work for them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Newer editions of the game may be compatible with Windows Vista, but some users still report problems. The Best of PC versions of KOTOR and KOTOR II may not need these fixes.

  • These fixes also apply to KOTOR II.

  • Downloading files from third parties can be dangerous. Do so at your own risk.

  • If you are installing the Best of PC version of KOTOR, do not download and install the patches, secuROM fix or the replacement mss32.dll file. You do not need them.
