How to Create an Opt-Out for Receiving E-Mail Messages in an E-Mail thumbnail
Cleaning up your inbox doesn't take much time.

Is your inbox stuffed with advertisements, newsletters and promotional emails from every store, Web site and organization you've ever registered with online? You could cancel your email address and get a new one, or you could clean up your inbox by simply unsubscribing from the mailing lists of unwanted senders. For the most part, the process is the same for most emails you'll receive.

Instructions

    • 1

Open one of the emails from the sender that you no longer wish to receive emails from.

    • 2

Scroll to the bottom of the email.

    • 3

Find the instructions for "opting out" or removal from the mailing list. These instructions are usually in very small print.

    • 4

Follow the instructions for removal from the mailing list. This will either be a link that you click on or instructions to reply to the email with "unsubscribe" in the subject line.

    • 5

Add the sender to your "blocked" list or junk mail list. This step is optional. Sometimes it can take several weeks to be removed from a mailing list. If you're sure you don't want to receive emails from the sender ever again, this is a good secondary defense against unwanted email.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have unsubscribed from the email list and continue to get email from the sender, contact them via email and ensure that your address is removed. Their contact information is usually listed in the "Contact Us" area of their Web site.

  • Adding senders to your blocked list will prevent them from sending you email in the future, even if you sign up to receive their emails at later date.
