How to Prove You Have a Valid Green Card
Having a green card authorizes immigrants to live, work and become permanent residents in the United States. Becoming a legal citizen allows you to have certain rights such as voting and other responsibilities in your new country. Green cards are valid for 10 years after the initial two-year conditional permanent resident status is lifted. You also must have it on you at all times. Regardless of the length, it needs to be renewed, via mail or online, within six months from the date the card expires. Proving your green card is valid can be done by showing other sources of ID and employment information.

Show your social security card, if you have one. Green cards can be used to apply for a social security card. Showing you have one can help the validity of your permanent residence card.

Show a state issued driver's license or passport, if you have one. A green card enables you to apply for both of these forms of ID. Showing either of them to someone along with your green card proves it is valid.

Show any ID's or pay stubs you may have from the company for which you work. In order to legally work in the United States, you need to have a permanent resident card. Showing your employment references can help prove your green card is valid. You can also show any legal tax documents you may have, as you are required to file your income taxes with the IRS when you obtain a green card.

Show proof that you have registered with the Selective Service and that can help prove your green card is valid. Registering is one of the responsibilities you are required to do if you are 18 to 25 years old.
